Dofollow And Nofollow – Google Secret On Pagerank Sculpting

Google PR

Google PR

It was not until yesterday that I got hold of this fact.

Let us say you have 10 points awarded on pagerank for a certain page.

Now, say you have 10 links on the page, out of which 5 are dofollow and the rest 5 are nofollow. As expected, the nofollow links get no PageRank juice at all, that is for sure. But the interesting thing is that, after this, even though you  are supposed to have 10 PageRank points left, your 5 dofollow links will get only 1 point each and NOT 2  point each.

That means even though nofollow links do not pass on any PR, they eat it up! In that case, it is always better to do some good, as it is already costing you. Also, getting a dofollow backlink form a page with a high number of nofollow links is seemingly less worthy!

In that case, how advisable is it to show your categories and archives on the homepage? They are a huge number of links and apparently nofollow.

  • i dont care much about dofollow and nofollow. if i like some blog and to comment on it then i will still comment my views on that post whether it gives me a dofollow backlink or a nofollow.

Nofollow links are also helpful as to grow traffic. at the end i think nofollow links are also useful for sure.

  • This is a rather new development. It all started when Matt Cutts decided to drop and declared PR Sculpting as irrelevant.
LOL, it was funny seeing how all the SEO gurus were wrecking their brains over this. In the end I am also pretty confused.

I am not convinced that it is true. And I hope this isnt true. For eg. a popular blogpost with lots of comments and trackbacks should have more link juice. But if it is true, then it may actually end up having less link juice.

Mat Cutts is as reliable a source as it gets, but its just so hard to digest this. There are still a lot of SEO pundits who doubt this claim.
