Accelerometer and Cell Phones

An accelerometer is a device that measures the acceleration of the device relative to it’s freefall. A cell phone is a device through which we can call others wirelessly. So how are the two related?

With the hardware boom in the cell phone industry nowadays, with hoards of features loading every model, an accelerometer becomes just another tool to play with.

Lets’ make a quick round up of the things we can possibly do with it.

1. We can count our steps relative to our speed.
2. Health freaks can hence calculate the calories lost in their daily jogs.
3. We can calculate the speed of the car we are moving in. On a more serious note, certain phones deploy accelerometers for better focusing (like Nokia N95).
4. There are also many games that use accelerometers (like neverball and some racing games).
5. It is definitely a fun thing to have and one which must be used carefully for optimized performance.

With all these features, the phone comes closer to being a better gadget.
