Ubuntu Software – Not Just Another Top 5 List

The popularity of linux has finally captured 1% of desktops. Now, comes the need for good software which Ubuntu surely lacks. Personally, I am a Ubuntu Linux fan. There are a lot of top Ubuntu software posts available on the internet and all of them narrow down to around seven applications when combined. Not so cool!
Here is my list of softwares I have on my Ubuntu installation.

  • Billiards GL

Billiards-GL

This game has a sleek and smooth graphics created with Python. The interface is so interactive and features such attractive effects, youll just love it. The gameplay is also as good as any other billiards game with 360 degree navigation. Dont miss it. Download here.

  • Armagetron

Armagetron

Armagetron is my current favourite game on ubuntu linux. It is not as simple as it looks and needs quite some presence of mind to defeat the oppenent. And not just that, you can play it over the lan as a multiplayer game as well. Just try it once and make sure you dont get addicted to it. Download here.

  • Desktop Flickr Organizer

Desktop-Flickr-Organizer

This software adds a flickr organizer to your desktop. So,now you can update and synchronize your photostream with a few clicks from on the desktop. Not only this, it has a split viewer panel which makes drag and drop valid. Another reason why i liked this software is that it is developed by an Indian. Download here.

  • Launchy

This is a really great application for Ubunut noobs.

Launchy

For those who cannot find their installed applications anywhere in GUI links, can use Launchy to find their applications. Not only this, launchy can also find command line applications. Download here.

  • Xaos – Fractal Zoomer

Xaos Fractal

Fractals are one of the most fascinating discoveries of mathematics. But I suck at mathematics. So in a few words, try out this software. It can generate around 30 fractals from custom functions and there are different rendering options available as well. Download here. Also check out the fractal gallery here.

  • Kasablanca

Kasablanca

Kasablanka is a lightening fast FTP client for Unix based servers. And when i say lightening,it really means lightening. It can upload files at least 30% to 40% faster than Filezilla or gFTP. Download here.

The list never ends. Add any useful softwares you find.

I have edited the post and added download links as requested, but i recommend using the repositories as installing package-wise can cause dependency problems.

I just cannot understand one thing - why you think that those programs are "Ubuntu" programs. Actually they are opensource programs and all of them are installable under ANY linux distribution! You Ubuntu fanboys should understand one thing - there is no Ubuntu software, there is Linux software.

And one last thing - why I will never use Ubuntu - because of it's community!
  • Well, this post is focused for installation on a Ubuntu or any debian system so may have mentioned Ubuntu more than often. Of course they are open source. Thanks for the heads up anyways..
And if you have any personal grievances against the ubuntu commmunity, go address them and they might reply. As for myself, I found the community rocking.
  • i have added links to the download pages
  • Thanks for this list. Just tried out Armagetron, which works flawless with a perfect network mode :-)
    All the best,
    Johannes

It would be a big improvement if the article had links to where to get these programs.
  • where are the download links
  • yes pallab. you should surely do. Besides showing applications for the command line as well, which gnomeDO-does not, launchy also performs on the fly mathematical calculations.
  • I am currently using GnomeDO (which comes with Linux Mint). Should I switch to Launchy? Does Launchy offer anything extra? I love Gnome DO as you can email, send tweets and more directly using it.
