A few hours ago, I updated some files on my WordPress installation of this blog manually. Everything went smooth, and I am running the latest version of WordPress even today. However, there was this warning/error message I kept getting from the time I did a manual update to WordPress 3.1.1 and I realized that I was actually getting the message even more, when I moved to WordPress 3.1.2 today.
The error message says clearly,
An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.
It appears in an annoying highlight of yellow as,

The next obvious move was to get this annoyance out of my face. I ventured out to find a way to remove it. The fix is pretty simple and needs you to have access to your FTP server’s root directory for this WordPress installation.
How to Fix “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now”?
- Go to your FTP root for WordPress. I use Filezilla to FTP into my web-server.
- Look for a file named .maintenance.
- Delete the file as soon as you see it.

If you were wondering about the content of that file,
<?php $upgrading = 1302060048; ?>
Now that you know, get back the clean warning free look on your WordPress installation and enjoy.
